How a hospital system established comprehensive tracking, reporting, and communication with AchieveIt

ABOUT MOUNT CARMEL HEALTH SYSTEM
Mount Carmel Health System is comprised of over 10,000 employees, 2,000 physicians, and 900 volunteers, serving more than a million patients in Central Ohio each year. Mount Carmel is a member of Trinity Health, one of the largest Catholic health care delivery systems in the nation.
LIFE IS GOOD
As one of the largest integrated health systems in the community, Mount Carmel provides people-centered care at four hospitals – Mount Carmel East, Mount Carmel Grove City, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s and Mount Carmel New Albany – an inpatient rehabilitation hospital, free-standing emergency centers, outpatient facilities, surgery centers, urgent care centers, primary care and specialty care physician offices, community outreach sites and homes across the region.
BIG CHALLENGE
Despite successful community care, individual practices were completely disconnected from the vision and strategic goals of the over-arching system. Previously, they were utilizing physical binders created by planning consultants outside of the organization. There was a false sense of direction. If someone left, newcomers wouldn’t know the background or where to start. Also, reporting and communication between the health system was ineffective and often difficult. When Mark Vorherr came on as President, he knew he needed to align his new group to the strategic goals of the health system with a reliable tracking system and attestable reporting.
HELP ARRIVES
So, Mark turned to AchieveIt. He created Annual Operating Plans for each fiscal year that tied his group’s work to the Mount Carmel Health System’s top four strategic goals, as well as their “4 P’s” - people, population, performance, and portfolio. 40 new leaders were given ownership of objectives and tactical level work within the plan to regularly communicate their progress.
LIFE IS EVEN BETTER
Now, Mark has a single source of truth to provide comprehensive reporting on how their structured planning supports Mount Carmel’s strategic goals and framework. In addition to reporting, how individual work directly contributes to incremental execution of strategic goals is visible year over year. In Mark’s words, the Medical Group was completely ‘flying blind’ prior to AchieveIt, and he believes the platform will help continue to drive organizational maturity across the entire health system.

Achievelt is driving better results for that future vision that we’re setting out on, and the direction we want to take our health system. It’s ensuring that we get there and that we optimize the performance along the way.”
